Synopsis


This webinar on Cities in the Age of AI brings together experts on human-machine collaborative systems, architectural design, and computing to discuss the myriad ways in which AI can be used to improve urban planning and design. They will share insights on how AI can unlock strategic value for urban planning and optimise the planning process, keeping in mind the need to use AI responsibly.

About the Speakers

SPEAKER
Prof. Emer. Steven Miller
Professor Emeritus, School of Computing and Information Systems
Singapore Management University


Steven has been doing case studies of people working with Smart Machines in real-world business settings. He recently co-authored a book with Thomas Davenport titled Working with AI: Real Stories of Human-Machine Collaboration that will be published by MIT Press in 2022. He is working with SMU's Centre for Management Practice to create teaching cases on Digital Transformation and AI applications. He does advisory work for the Integrated Health Information Systems (IHiS) Academy for learning and training, and for Certis Group's Chief Digital Officer and Centre for Applied Intelligence. He is appointed to Singapore’s Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA)’s AI Technology Advisory Panel which includes advising URA’s Design and Planning Lab.

He also serves as an advisor to One Connect Financial Technology Singapore. In recent years, he has served as an adviser to the board of the ASEAN Financial Innovation Network and their APIX platform, and to Changi Airport Group’s Corporate IT Division.

He was a faculty member at SMU for nearly 18 years. He served as Founding Dean of SMU’s School of Computing and Information Systems for over 13 years. He also served as SMU’s Vice Provost for Research for 8 years. Earlier in his career, he was a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to joining SMU, he spent 13 years in industry with Fujitsu Ltd., IBM, and other organisations.

Prof. Bige Tuncer
Associate Professor, Architecture and Sustainable Design Pillar
Singapore University of Technology and Design


Bige is an associate professor and capstone program director at the Architecture and Sustainable Design Pillar of Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). At SUTD, she leads the Informed Design Lab. The lab’s research focuses on (big) data informed urban planning and design, combining multi-source, multi-scale, and multi-time data, around questions of which behavioral hypotheses can be drawn from specific urban data sets and their combinations, as well as the relationship of such hypotheses with the spatial and organisational aspects of urban spaces.

In Singapore, she has led and participated in various prominent research projects, such as the National Science Experiment, Sustainable Urban Living – Livable Places project, FCL2 Big-Data Informed Urban Design and Governance project, and Pedestrian Comfort in Crowded Pathways project.

She received her PhD in Architecture (design informatics) from TU Delft, her MSc in Architecture (computational design) from Carnegie Mellon University, and her BArch from Middle East Technical University. She was an assistant professor at TU Delft, a visiting professor at the Chair of Information Architecture at ETH Zurich, a visiting scholar at MIT, and a visiting professor at the Computer Engineering Department of University of Pavia, Italy.

Hady is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Singapore Management University, where he directs the BSc (Computer Science) programme and leads the Preferred.AI research group on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. His publications have been recognized at top AI conferences with a distinguished paper award at IJCAI-20 as well as an honorable mention at AAAI-14. Brice leads the Strategy & Insights Practice for Arup Australasia. He is an economist and strategy consultant with 16+ years of work experience in management, technology and sustainability consulting. His most recent projects in Singapore include the formulation of the Green Economy strategy for PMO-SG, the RIE 2025 USS Masterplan for the NRF, and HDB’s Smart Urban Habitat Digital Strategy.

Prior to Arup, Brice worked as a public policy advisor for the World Bank and the IFC, where he advised 60+ municipalities on economic development, policy reforms and digital transformation. As the Head of Global Strategy for Samsung, he also shaped the company’s corporate strategy and led Smart City projects in Korea and abroad.
