Alliance for Action on Norms for Joss Paper Burning
Cleanliness and health-related concerns on the indiscriminate burning of joss paper in housing estates can cause inconveniences to residents. Campaigns led by the Alliance for Action (AfA) on Norms for Joss Paper Burning aim to remind and educate the Chinese community on responsible burning practices.
Alliance for Action on Norms for Joss Paper Burning
The Alliance for Action (AfA) on Norms for Joss Paper Burning is a community-driven cross-sector collaboration involving stakeholders such as religious organisations, cultural experts, religious goods merchants, and the Chinese media.
Launched in July 2022, the goal of the AfA is to forge a consensus within the Chinese community on desired norms for the traditional custom of joss paper burning. The AfA’s multi-year public education campaign aims to raise awareness on the correct way of practicing joss paper burning –that is to be considerate to one’s neighbours and the environment. As AfA Secretariat, MSO provides support for the AfA’s work and assists the AfA with link-ups to Town Councils and NEA to strengthen this public-private-people partnership.
