Written Answer by Ministry of National Development on number of low-income families who are renting HDB units, in whole or in part, in the open market and the mix of flat sizes for this group

Ms Mariam Jaafar: To ask the Minister for National Development (a) what is the current number of low-income families who are renting HDB units, in whole or in part, in the open market; and (b) what is the mix of flat sizes for this group.

Answer:

HDB does not have data on the income of tenants who rent HDB flats in the open market.

Eligible flat owners can apply to rent out spare bedroom(s) or their whole flat to eligible tenants. HDB does not require flat owners to indicate their tenants’ income in their application to rent out their bedroom or whole flat.

Families and individuals who are in need and do not have other housing options within their means may request for a rental flat from HDB. We will carefully assess every request to understand each household’s circumstances, and assist them with a rental flat if they have no other housing options.
