Question No: 5518

Question by: Mr Yip Hon Weng

To ask the Minister for National Development (a) whether the Ministry will consider the feasibility of implementing a requirement for mandatory neutering of cats in HDB homes to reduce abandonment and stray populations; (b) if not, why not; and (c) what specific initiatives are currently in place to raise awareness about the importance of neutering pet cats before the cat management framework is implemented.

Answer:

NParks encourages the sterilisation of pet cats, which can help to prevent unintended breeding and has health and behavioural benefits. As part of the proposed pet cat licensing scheme, we are looking at further encouraging pet cat sterilisation through a lower licence fee for sterilised pet cats. We will share more details when ready.

2.       Meanwhile, NParks will continue to work closely with its partners to raise awareness on responsible pet cat ownership, including animal care and the benefits of sterilisation, through platforms such as Pets’ Day Out events and roadshows.
