Record Number Registered As Professional Engineers This Year

Nov 5, 2016

The new batch of professional engineers (PEs) from the branches of civil, mechanical and electrical engineering received their certificates from Mr Desmond Lee, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development, at the Professional Engineers Board’s (PEB) Day of Dedication 2016 held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre this morning. This batch with 102 new PEs is a record number of registrations over the same period – with this batch registered from November 2015 to October 2016 – in the last eight years.

Over 250 PEs attended the Day of Dedication 2016 and pledged to continue their service to society and commit to high standards of professional engineering practice. The Day of Dedication recognises the role and contribution of PEs in the development of Singapore’s built environment.

Two Distinguished Professional Engineer Awards were also presented to Er. Tan Ee Ping and Er. Liew Mun Leong. The awards were presented in recognition of their outstanding achievements in engineering, management, research and development, and entrepreneurship, as well as for their service to the profession.

Four specialist PEs in geotechnical engineering and 16 ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer (ACPE) were also presented with certificates of registration. 12 Gold Medal Awards were presented to outstanding graduates of the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) undergraduate and postgraduate engineering programmes.

President of PEB, Er. Ho Siong Hin (何祥兴) said, “As PEs, we are given the privilege by law to practise professional engineering and we are required to deliver our services professionally. We therefore seek to distinguish ourselves by providing the best engineering solutions to our clients and employers. More importantly, a professional engineer needs to act with prime regard to the public interest. A PE has to bear this objective upper most in his mind and ensure that he carries out his work with knowledge, competence and due diligence."

As part of its efforts to strengthen the expertise and capabilities of the profession and support the implementation of new regulatory requirements by government agencies, PEB will be looking into registering PEs in a new branch, chemical engineering, as well as registering specialist PEs in four new specialised branches, namely, lift and escalator engineering, crane engineering, access platform engineering and pressure vessel engineering.
